From north to south, beautiful beaches stretch out in the Ecuadorian Pacific, along with ports, fishing villages, modern cities and protected forests. The tallest mangroves in the world are found in the Majagual forest, in the CayapasMataje ecological reserve. In the Machalilla National Park, the sea, the virgin beaches and the forests are linked to the history of pre-Columbian cultures. The city of Bahía de Caráquez was named an ecological city. Very close to the Isla de la Plata, humpback whales can be seen, which arrive every year from Antarctica to mate between June and October. The largest refuge for seabirds in Ecuador is on Santa Clara Island, south of the coast. The city of Guayaquil, the main Ecuadorian port, is considered a model of urban regeneration in Latin America, and is increasingly consolidating as one of the most important convention destination in the region.
